Last Week

So last week was “study week” or for some people, a week off. I’ll didn’t study that much, I’ll admit, but did 2 assignments (90% of one, 50% of another and prepared my lab report). I am now up to par with my mathematics too which is pretty good.I had to whip out last years lecture notes though, I’m not sure what that says about my lecturer but I have learned the content nonetheless.

So here is what I got up to last week:

Today (Sunday)

Slept in til 1pm, did some Fluids work. Generally mucked about. Planned to go for a long ride but was too tired.

Saturday

Went for a few rides, almost learnt a 180 degree stoppie (stoppie, then rotate). Did the 2nd last question on my math assignment. Did some more website work. I have a few ideas brewing.

Friday

Did my maths assignment, except for one question and a section of another. Mucked about on my website.

Thursday

Did nothing the whole day I think. Went to Jono’s house for a while during the night

Wednesday

Hanged out at Danny and Jonesy’s new place. Fixed up my dirtbike some more. Now I need another spacer to make it complete. also watched Nitro Circus 3 with Director commentary (I didn’t know it had this til then). Also watched Rhys and Jonesy grimace while drinking their horribly unproportionate Long Island Ice Teas. Took Rhys home at the end of the night.

Tuesday

Did nothing. Probably should have studied but sometimes these things don’t happen.

Monday

Don’t think I did anything. Probably did some riding, I can’t really remember.

Sunday

Worked on my bike. Rewired it, got it to idle and installed the kill switch. Previously we had to kill it with the choke (how fitting). Stalling it might not work since there was no chain/tyre

So that was my week. Pretty boring huh? Well I am pretty brief in my descriptions but you’re somewhat right.

Why WordPress "hacks" are better than plugins

I read a few days ago that someone has been using the plugin called “Easy Adsenser” and apparently 1 in 20 ads shown are the developers (to gain revenue). The plugin basically places ads in sidebar(s) via widgets and throughout posts. The problem I saw was he doesn’t explicitly tell people. Making money via Adsense is no easy task (unless you’re a Youtube partner, then it is incredibly easy). Earning $3 per day is good, even making money is a good result. So this user was quite annoyed when he saw his ads weren’t shown (even though you can change it). I personally never click ads simply because none ever appeal to me. I don’t use Ad Blocking scripts either since I don’t find them annoying or even notice them.

If this user had actually gone to the (little) trouble of making a few modifications to their theme they could have setup an awesome new feature. It’s not terribly hard either. Also plugins are good at slowing down WordPress. For example, this plugin called Wordtube loads it’s javascript on every page via the header. Many other plugins do the same sine the developer has no idea where the user will put stuff. With a hack you can only add the javascript on pages you know you will place it on (no one puts a contact form on the home page, do they?).

Adobe BrowerLab; Sign Up While You Still Can!

Well if you’re like me, you like everything to look good in every browser (except IE6). Of course you can use sites like BrowserShots but there is a few things terribly wrong with it (enough to make me not actually use it). The load times are horrendous for starters, upwards of 10 minutes to an hour in some cases, probably due to the popularity of the service. I think you can pay for faster load times but that isn’t what we want (do we?). And there is way too many browsers already pre-selected. There should be common browsers and then older or less common browsers. I guess it needs a better UI is what I am getting at.

Well once again Adobe have come to the rescue with Adobe BrowserLab a.k.a Meer Meer. My first impressions are that it is unbelievably fast compared to other similar services. It also renders multiple browser images (yes, images, I thought it was straight HTML at first) at one time, so you can “onion skin” your selected browsers and see where objects are skewed. For example I found out IE7 renders the video page incorrectly on this site.

This free service by Adobe is still in beta so I suggest you get in quick. It was only by luck that I got in; I decided to see if it was usable after trying to find a multi-browser preview solution. You can find BrowerLab here and you need an Adobe ID (also free).

Included Browers/OS:

  • Firefox 3/XP
  • Firefox 2/XP
  • Firefox3/OSX
  • Firefox 2/OSX
  • Internet Explorer 7/XP
  • Internet Explorer 6/XP
  • Safari 3.0/OSX

As you can see there is no support for Linux or Chrome (yet?). I’d expect Firefox on Linux to display similar to other operating systems. Firefox2 and Firefox3 usually display identical pages, same for IE6 and 7. Also, Chrome uses Webkit and so does Safari! Perhaps Adobe is still sorting out a deal with Google or still porting it over as everything is presented through Adobe Flash Player.

Also note, you need to comment out or remove any conditional statements that prompt the user with a JavaScript alert box. I just PHP-commented it out or you could add letters in some places to make it invalid.

Remember, sign up while you still can!
